This 1942 publication by the Container Corporation’s head of design, Egbert Jacobson, aimed to introduce Wilhelm Ostwald’s color theory to an audience of American commercial designers. Ostwald’s work had influenced the German Bauhaus during interwar years. Jacobson and Bauhaus émigré Herbert Bayer, who did much design work for the company, set out to revolutionize color use in art and advertising in order to achieve a psychological sense of balance and order.
