This article, taken from the October 1961 issue of the German architecture and civil engineering magazine Deutsche Bauzeitung, explains the origins of the successful Modernist furniture design company. Knoll Associates was founded in 1938 by Hans Knoll, a German immigrant to the U.S., and drew inspiration from European “neue Sachlichkeit.” The company licensed designs from well-known émigrés such as Marcel Breuer and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and, after enjoying considerable success in the United States, expanded operations to postwar Europe in the form of Knoll International.
